The Cailleach Beara, also known as The Hag of Beara is one of the oldest mythological beings associated with Ireland. Cailleach being the Gaelic word for hag or old crone which derived from Caille, which literally translates to 'hood' or 'veiled one' in which she's depicted here masking her age.
The Cailleach forms part of the Great Goddess Trinity alongside younger incarnations as The Maiden and The Mother.
Her ability to control the weather and the seasons meant that many communities looked on her with reverance and fear.
The Cailleach is often attached to sites of geographical and geological significance such as 'Hag's Head' at the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare and 'Sliabh Cailli' the hag/witches hill in County Meath.
